Trip To Sydney (August)

Blog 17 :: 2007 / 08 :: English ::

I went to Sydney with my car using a part of the 3 weeks holidays we got after finishing Hellboy.
It did rain a lot, especially on the way back. The coastline between Byron Bay and Newcastle is stunning, so most of the pictures are from there.

Kingscliff

I got some extra holidays for finishing Hellboy - The Sience Of Evil. So I went with my car to Sydney along the coast.
First stop was here. Could be Kingscliff.

Arrawarra Beach

Arrawarra Beach First Night here on this great Caravan Park just before Coffs Harbour.
In Winter it gets dark here really early. And the sun rises early too. At 6am it is bright daylight. So getting up early helps getting more daylight. I try to get up at 7 every day. That's 2 hours before work.

That's the beach at 7 o'clock in the morning. It's a very nice part of the day.

Whale Watching

Coffs Harbour. I only wanted to make a short break and walked through the harbour when I passed a sign announcing whale watching for $30.
So I stepped onto this boat which started to take off almost in the same moment. - 30 minutes later we saw these 2 humpback whales.

They hang around the boat for about an hour. The skipper asked us to make a lot of noise each time they showed up. The calve was very interested in us and the mother didn't mind to stay around either.

Lighthouse

A Lighthouse near Port Macquarie. There are always nice stories to read. This one was about the men who serviced the light house. These were remote places, not like today. They had to walk to the light house for days. The lights were first fired by gas burners. Someone had to make sure that they always burn. Today everything is automatic and noone is needed to run the light house anymore

Port Macquarie

Another stretch of the wild and beautiful coastline between Byron Bay and Newcastle.

South of Port Macquarie winds this river into the ocean. A good spot for fishing apparently.

Off the coast

Everything is still very brown from the long drought. But a few patches of green can be seen already.

Newcastle

Newcastle is a really nice smaller version of Sydney. Seems to be a good place to live.
East Newcastle features a lot of nice old houses like these.

Gosford Reptile Park

Two sleepy Tasmanian Devils.
The ranger told us that the Devil population in Tasmania is suffering from an unknown virus since a few year. They don't want to loose another unique species. So they sent a few Devils to one zoo in each state.
Devils only feed on dead animals.

A Dingo.
The ranger said that in the not so far future there won't be any Dingos left. They will mate with dogs and disappear.

Sydney - Glebe Market

Pete on Glebe Market in Sydney. It was a wonderfull day. One of those days which makes me sad about having to leave this town. The rest of the week was pretty bad weather with a lot of rain.

Coogee

On the (traditional) coast walk from Bondi to Coogee. I split it into 2 days with good stops in Tamarama and Bronte.

Back on the road

Still raining. This year was a very good year for the dams in Sydney. They are almost back to normal.
In Brisbane it did rain as well but not as heavy as here. The Dams filled up good 3% which gave us almost half a year of water

Flooded

All the way back to Brisbane were floodings. Thousands of frogs made a really noisy concert here.

During the second world war this prison was build for all germans in the region. They were put into it as prisoners of war.
Despite the fact that this was a prison they didn't have the worst life. Some of them where doctors so they opened a hospital for the region.

Byron Bay

Julian Rocks are barely visible through the rain. It was really windy here as well. Almost blow me off my feet.
